9 LinkedIn mistakes to avoid to succeed with your profile

LinkedIn

LinkedIn is not only the world’s largest network for professionals. It is a communication channel, a work agenda, a place to keep up to date with the latest news in your professional sector, where you can keep your finger on the pulse of current affairs and grow professionally. Yes, LinkedIn goes beyond finding a job, we guarantee it! And with our tips you will stand out from the rest.  What mistakes are you making in your profile and what should you do to fix them?

Do not add photo

It is typical to create a profile and leave it without a photo because we do not have one of sufficient quality, it is too heavy to upload or we simply do not find one that we like for LinkedIn (for the sake of giving a good image). Whatever the excuse, the truth is that leaving a LinkedIn profile without a picture is a big mistake. Do not leave it for later and put one. Depending on your profession, you can allow yourself to go out in a more relaxed and relaxed way or looking serious. In any case, make sure your face is clearly visible and that you are alone, not in a couple or group.

Outdated skills

Every little new skill you acquire should be added in your profile: the management of a new social network, skills learned in a course (and add it in Certifications in such a case). Also, ask your colleagues to validate this skill.

Do not follow other companies

Why, if I have a job? First, to compare your updates with those of your own company’s profile because it can help you to get ideas. Second, because LinkedIn is increasingly used by them to post their job offers and you might be interested in some of them. Third, because if they share good content, it’s worth it.

Do not advertise your position

Under the name you always have to have what is your position, in what company or the field in which you move. This is essential because it is the first thing that everyone will see.

URL different from your name

Log into your profile and look at the url just below the “View profile as” button in the header. That link is for your public LinkedIn profile and must have your name on it. That way, whoever searches for you (either on Google or within this social network) will find you faster. Don’t have it customized? Put your cursor over the link and the Settings wheel will appear. Click on it and the page will take you to your profile. In the right column you will find “Your public profile URL” and there you can modify it. Important: it must include your first and last name.

Empty or wasted extract

The extract allows you to put in your own words all your experience, add details that you think are important or of interest. It is best to put in a few lines why you should be hired and what differentiates you from the rest, the achievements you have made in your career and everything you have done to achieve them. If you are in the middle of a job search, it may be a good idea to move this module higher up in your profile.

Lying with languages

If everyone lies about their level in a language, don’t you do it too. In fact, our advice is to banish from your profile those languages you don’t master 50%.

Do not “ask”.

Ask for recommendations from people you have worked with. Ask to “Connect” with professionals on a regular basis, always in relation to your position.

Do not show movement

Be proactive by posting interesting articles you read or sharing job offers you find. LinkedIn is a social network where people tend to be passive and those who move, stand out from the rest, besides, a stationary profile is useless.Follow groups and participate in conversations. And you can also use it as a communication channel. Imagine you need to contact someone. Ask them to Connect and take the opportunity to write them a message.
